During Martin’s childhood, his fascination for the way that light landed on objects – sunlight off a lake, the light coming through tree branches, or the way sunlight would beam through a cloud – drew him to develop a unique perspective of looking at light. Growing up, he really loved photography because he enjoyed capturing how light interacts with objects.

Upon graduation from high school, Martin attended the University of Michigan to study computer science and chemistry. Later, while working for Ken Paulsen of Lighting Expressions, a lighting design firm in Los Angeles, CA, he went on to study architectural drafting. Theatrical lighting was his focus while working with Ken, highlighting the objects in a room versus flooding the room with light. This was the beginning of an expansive career. His experiences in this field took him across the country to work with other celebrated lighting designers, including John Case. While working at the Case Companies in San Diego, CA, Martin’s hard work landed him the role of Vice President of the company.

In 2000, Martin moved to Houston, TX to work as a lighting designer for Lighting, Inc. Then, in 2010, Martin started his own lighting design company, Martin Sunday Designs. (To continue reading about the start of the company, click here).

When Martin is not busy creating new lighting designs for clients, he enjoys reading, bowling and playing with his two dogs, Riley and Logan. Snow skiing is one of his favorite pastimes and his favorite places to do so are in Colorado and California. He is also passionate about spiritual growth, and sits on the board of Land of My Grandfather’s (a spiritual retreat center).
